Cigars for Male Babies?
What brought about about the tradition of giving out cigars when a male baby is born?
*Note: I’ve heard about the Indian tradition of handing out of smoking cigars when a baby is born, but I’m not sure that I buy that as being the origin because back 1800s-ish, I believe cigars were basically only given for male babies. Maybe it was just the sexist whites adopting the tradition and modifying it to their own purposes.
Anyway, what’s the internet think?
Im totally guessing here, but this is what i think…
In the old days, men were not allowed in the “birth room.” I think they would gather around to pass time and smoke to calm nerves and give them something to do while they were waiting. It is sort of like when you watch a movie and someone is giving birth and one lady says to another “Get me a bucket of hot water.” The hot water is requested for no other reason than to get the most hysterical one out of the room and focused on a task to keep her out of the room and busy.
